Electronica Artist BT
BT

ELECTRONICA ARTIST BT EARLY LIFE & INFLUENCES

Electronica artist BT, born Brian Wayne Transeau on October 4, 1971, in Rockville, Maryland. He is an American multi-instrumentalist, composer, singer, songwriter, producer, technologist, and audio technician. BT is a pioneer of trance music and for

stretching electronic music to its technical breaking point.

BT listened to classical music at four years old and studied classical piano. In four years he was studying at the Washington Conservatory of Music. His exposure to electronic music came from the pop culture of breakdancing music and Vangelis’ soundtrack for the movie Bladerunner in 1982. These early influences led him to artists like Bambaataa, Kraftwerk, New Order, and of course Depeche Mode.

BT was an eclectic musician in high school. He played punk guitar, ska bass, and drums in another band. He studied jazz at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, by the time he was fifteen. At Berklee, he became a multi-instrumentalist, playing piano, keyboards, synths, guitar, bass, sequencers, drums, drum machines, the glockenspiel, as well as modifying instruments.

EARLY CAREER

BT left Berklee in 1989 and moved to Los Angeles with the dream of becoming a successful singer-songwriter. After several months, he realized his true love was electronic music. He returned to Maryland months later and worked with Dubfire and Sharam of Deep Dish, where they started Deep Dish Records.

The next few years saw BT pioneering the trance sound he would become famous for. His tracks ‘Relativity’ and ‘A Moment of Truth’ became hits in the United Kingdom, but not the United States. He was unaware of how popular he was overseas. BT became fully aware though when Sasha bought him a plane ticket so he could see for himself. In front of thousands of clubbers, Sasha dropped a BT track, and the dancefloor erupted. BT was now aware.

BT met Paul Oakenfold and subsequently signed with Perfecto Records. His first album, Ima, released on Perfecto in 1995 consisted of progressive house music. The first release, ‘Nocturnal Transmission’ was featured in the film, ‘The Fast and The Furious’ in 2001.

With the success of Ima, BT collaborated with Tori Amos on ‘Blue Skies’ which reached number one on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs Chart in January 1997. This led to collaborations with and productions for Sting, Madonna, Seal, Sarah McGlachin, NSYNC, Britney Spears, Diana Ross, and Mike Oldfield.

BT released his second album, Electric Sky Church Music in 1997, was darker than Ima and more involved musically. The first release, ‘Flaming June’ was a trance collaboration with Paul van Dyk. This initial collaboration led to subsequent collaborations. They remixed BT’s ‘Remember’ and reached it also became number one on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart.

Through 2016, BT has released ten albums and worked with numerous stars in electronic music, as well as rock, pop, and hip-hop.

FILM SCORING

In 1999, BT scored the soundtrack to Go, which was a movie about dance music culture. He moved to Los Angeles and worked on the soundtracks to The Fast and The Furious and Under Suspicion.

THE TECHNOLOGIST: STUTTER EDIT

BT pioneered the sound engineering technique of the stutter edit. In layman’s terms,

“Stutter’ edits, commonly used in a variety of pop music, including dance music and hip-hop, slice and dice clips into pieces and then reassemble them in a different order.”

These sounds repeat rhythmically. BT formed a software company, Sonik Architects, and developed the plugins Stutter Edit, BreakTweaker, and Sonifi.

You can hear it in his music: The countless nights of dance floor devastation, the appreciation for the heritage of dance music, the aggressive desire to innovate and do something new. Listen to “Foul Beats,” one of Boris’s first tracks for revered techno label SCI+TECH, and it’s all right there.

There are overnight sensations, and then there’s Boris. Baptized in the booths of New York City, the Russian native learned the craft of DJ-ing in front of the most demanding crowds in the world, developing a deep sense of what moves a packed floor in a moment, an hour, or a full night-to-morning extended session. From TKYEAR to today, he’s been a resident at every major New York nightclub (including Pacha, Crobar, and Roxy), and received award nominations for his service (Club World Awards, America’s Best DJ), not to mention the adoration of dedicated fans: His “BELIEVE” brand is based on their faith in him. He’s also released several compilations on local label Nervous; timeless capsules of the sounds of the city. (He’s set to release a new album on Nervous this March.)

But New York is just the beginning of the story. Boris is a resident at Space (Miami), a regular at BPM Festival (Mexico) and Wet Republic (Las Vegas), and has brought his particular set of skills to Japan, Korea, and Ibiza. His annual pool party Get Wet is a staple of Miami Music Week.

Now, Boris is parlaying all that international intelligence into new productions that represent a fresh musical direction. New Generation, his aptly named debut EP on SCI+TECH (the venerable underground label of legendary artist Dubfire), is deep techno with an energetic BPM: One cut of undeniable funk (“Generate”) and one of undeniable filth (“Foul Beats”), each meant to take the night to the next level. It follows up “Give Yourself” on Roger Sanchez’s Stealth, an electro-house nugget with a walloping kick drum and epic double breakdown. These are the first in a stream of new work melding harder tech sounds with dance floor dynamics.

Stafford Brothers
The Stafford Brothers are the hottest Australian export to recently hit the United States. Currently ranked the #1 DJs in their homeland (3 years running, ITM Awards), brothers Matt & Chris Stafford made their way to the West Coast, now residing in the Hollywood Hills of LA. Shortly after they were the first ever electronic act signed to Cash Money Records and released their debut single “Hello” featuring Lil Wayne and Christina Milian this past February. Hello – still in its early stages of Australian release has already hit Double Platinum selling status reaching #4 on the official singles chart and #1 on iTunes (Dance) sitting inside of the top 5 most played tracks on radio this year.

Hook N Sling
There is no denying that the eyes and ears of the world’s dance music fraternity are focused firmly on Hook N Sling in 2012. In just a few short years the man has gone from aspiring disc jockey to in-demand DJ, remixer and producer property.

Hook’s formative years saw him chalk up some impressive feats, in 2007 scoring an ARIA nomination, a DMC Buzz Chart #1 and several Pete Tong plays for his breakout tune “The Bump”, and later straddling both club and commercial radio success with “The Best Thing” and “Gotta Make A Move”. Add to that a swag of head-turning remixes for Calvin Harris, Fedde Le Grand, Miike Snow, Miami Horror and Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, the acclaim of mixing the Ministry of Sound Annual in 2010, and rocking gigs such as Pacha, Space Ibiza, Global Gathering and Future Music Festival, the early warnings of his impending ascent were clear.

But it’s been in the past 2 years that Hook has come out swinging hardest. First with his breakout mix for Hard Rock Sofa & St. Brothers’ “Blow Up” for Axtone (#1 Buzz Chart), and soon after with his impressive collaborative original “Diamonds In The Sky” with TV Rock and Rudy, released through Fedde’s own Flamingo Records (also garnering Tong support and climbing to the top 10 of the Dutch Tipparade). “Edge Of The Earth” (with Richard Dinsdale & Sam Obernik) on Sanchez’s iconic Stealth Records followed, with a smash remix of Wolfgang Gartner and Will.I.Am’s “Forever” in close step – all releases cementing his rightful ‘one to watch’ status by exhibiting his trademark production acumen and versatility.
